Geiger Counters & Iodide Supplements, the essentials - Health

Radiation detectors known as Geiger counters and potassium iodide supplements sales have soared after the recent Japanese reactor disaster. Iodide supplements are proven to block some amounts of radiation and are selling out in North America especially on the west coast of the United States. Sales of Radiation Detectors are also spiking. Geiger counters can determine how much radiation a person has been infected with.

The continued increase in sales of these items has been based on the news of Japans inability to cool down their damaged nuclear reactor cores in the Fukushima power plant. The possibility of a core meltdown is driving Americans to stock up on iodine supplements and Geiger counters. The realization that nuclear waste in the form of radiation clouds coming from Japan and reaching the US west coast is causing many to panic.

Retailers are rushing to restock their supplies of iodine pills and Geiger counters while experts in the US are trying to calm the population by insisting that no harmful amounts of radiation from the Japanese reactors will reach American soil. Geiger counters are used to detect ionizing radiation (usually beta particles and gamma rays, but certain models can detect alpha particles).

One of the nuclear experts, and also a professor at Northwestern University, Elmer Lewis, "I think it's exceedingly improbable I'd say impossible that this accident would deliver any detectable amount of radiation at ground level in the United States," said Elmer Lewis. Lewis continued to reassure the media that any amount of radiation from the Japanese reactors that do, if ever reach the US will have absolutely no health consequences. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission also agreed with Lewis and said no harmful levels of nuclear radiation are expected to reach American soil. Despite such statements, Americans are scrambling to buy iodine pills and supplements along with Geiger counters. Potassium iodine which can to a certain degree protect the thyroid gland from radiation if taken shortly before exposure, does not protect other parts of the human body from radiation.

Companies that sell and stock iodine supplements are overwhelmed and many of these companies are saying their phones dont stop ringing. This has also been the case for companies that sell Radiation Detectors. American companies who sell Geiger counters and iodine pills are desperately looking to Europe and elsewhere to meet their supply demands.
